ATLAS OCEAN VOYAGES[edit]

Atlas Ocean Voyages[1] is the U.S.-based yacht expedition brand of Mystic Invest Holding, which owns and operates a river cruise fleet, as well as hotels and resorts, attractions, helicopter tours, and consumer space travel. Initially established in April 2019 as Mystic Cruises USA and rebranded as Atlas Ocean Voyages in September 2019[2], the expedition cruise line has its US headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

OWNERSHIP[edit]

Mystic Invest Holding[3] is a family-owned financial holding based in Portugal with multiple brands operating in the travel & tourism sector in areas such as cruises, tours and attractions, hotels and resorts, space tourism, and real estate.

Mário Ferreira, Atlas’ founder, and chairman of Mystic Invest Holding, is a Portuguese entrepreneur with more than 30 years of experience in the travel and tourism sector. He also serves as chief executive officer of the line’s privately held parent company Mystic Invest Holding.

Ferreira started in 1993 with the launch of DouroAzul, a river cruise line operating on Portugal’s Douro River. For more than 20 years, the company established its reputation as a leader in the river cruise industry before venturing internationally with the 2015 acquisition of the German river cruise line Nicko Cruises. Today, Mystic is the third-largest river cruise operator in the world, with a fleet of 40+ ships and operations in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

In 2019, Ferreira signed a contract with WestSea-Viana shipyard in Portugal for six 200-guest expedition vessels.[4] The following year he established Atlas Ocean Voyages, a U.S. cruise brand that offers yacht-style luxury cruises to remote polar destinations and the world’s most sought-after ports of call that would eventually grow to a six-ship fleet over the next several years. Ferreira created and developed several other tourism businesses, from interactive museums and theme parks to 5-star hotels and helicopter tours. His passion for adventure travel likely developed working aboard Cunard Line’s Vistafjord.

LEADERSHIP[edit]

James A. Rodriguez was named president[5] and chief executive officer of Atlas Ocean Voyages on August 1, 2022. James began his cruise industry career with Crystal Cruises and joined Oceania Cruises in 2003 as a key founding team member. During his 19-year tenure, he has been involved in virtually every facet of the brand, including omnichannel marketing, sales, corporate communications, loyalty programs, guest services, onboard product development, new ship design, e-commerce, technology, sustainability initiatives, and corporate philanthropy.

Before entering the cruise industry, he was director of marketing and development for Denver-based Navigant International and a travel advisor with Atlas Travel (no connection to Atlas Ocean Voyages). Rodriguez earned his bachelor’s in marketing and PR from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. Recently, he received two Harvard Business School certifications, one in sustainable business strategy and the other in sustainable investing.

SUSTAINABILITY[edit]

Atlas yachts realize the possibilities of environmental stewardship with the latest hybrid power management[6] and propulsion systems, maximizing fuel efficiency and consuming as little as one-fifth of the fuel compared to conventional cruise-ship systems, reducing our environmental impact. This technology was initially developed for naval warships; the two onboard Schottel SPJ 82 Pump Jets can propel ships at a near-silent cruising speed of five knots without scaring sea life away. This technology also prevents damage to the fragile ecosystems on ocean floors and limited use of anchors is possible using a GPS-based Dynamic Position System.

CRUISES AND DESTINATIONS[edit]

Polar Expeditions visit Antarctica, the Arctic and Norwegian Fjords, Iceland, and Greenland.

Epicurean Expeditions focus on the gastronomy and culture of the Mediterranean and Greek Isles and the British Isles and Northern Europe.
