Since 2003, the publicly funded BCcampus has provided support to 25 post-secondary institutions of British Columbia by facilitating open textbooks and other open educational resources, such as alternative assessment toolkits[1] and a collection of resources to guide Indigenization of post-secondary institutions[2]. BCcampus has offices in Victoria, BC, and Vancouver, BC.[3]

BCcampus has also led a number of projects connected to teaching and learning and supported through various ministries of the B.C. Government, such as training resources for suicide prevention[4], anti-racism/anti-hate resources[5], support for student mental health[6], and preventing and responding to sexual violence on campus[7][8].

Open textbooks[edit]

In 2012, BCcampus was funded to make British Columbia the first province in Canada[9] to offer students free online, open textbooks for the 40 most popular post-secondary courses in the province[10][11].

The project, currently named BCcampus Open Education, was initially called the B.C. Open Textbook Project. Its goal is to make post-secondary education in British Columbia more accessible by reducing student costs through the use of openly licensed textbooks and other OER. In September 2020, the BCcampus Open Education project realized over $20 million [12][13] (CAD) in student savings since the program's inception, through a library of curated open textbooks[14] and extensive support for open textbook development[15]

Associations[edit]

A founding member of the OER Foundation[16], BCcampus provides additional resources to the post-secondary community of B.C. by supporting or facilitating other projects and groups, such as the British Columbia Teaching & Learning Council (BCTLC), and the Educational Technology Users Group (ETUG), as well as to international organizations focused on post-secondary education, such as OERu.
