The following is a comparison of operating systems for children.

To enter this list an operating system will need to:

  • Be actively maintained & supported.
  • Be designed for children of ages 0–12.
  • Offer a mechanism to easily add and remove software from the system.
  • Contain security mechanisms to allow adults to administrate the system.
  • Contain security mechanisms to prevent children from breaking the system and/or provide a simple mechanism to restore the system to a default working state.
  • Support management and filtering of internet connections, if any.

  • Operating System: The name of the operating system that is described.
  • Latest release: The most recent stable release of the operating system.
  • Base OS: If applicable, the underlying operating system on which this operating system is based.
  • License: The license model under which the software is licensed. These can be both free and paid licenses
  • Retail Hardware: The devices which can be purchased with the operating system already loaded.
  • BYO Hardware: The devices on which a user can install the operating system themselves.
  • Input Mechanisms: The primary input mechanisms that the operating system and the majority of applications are designed for.
