Dimitris Zissis is a Greek academic and scholar known for his work as an Associate Professor at the University of the Aegean in the Department of Product & Systems Design Engineering. Dimitris was previously a member of the deep tech startup MarineTraffic.[1]

His work is aimed at introducing research results to the market through the close collaboration between industry and academia. He is most noted for his work on big data analytics and sensor fusion.

Professional career[edit]

Dimitris has over a decade of teaching and research background at various private and public institutions, including the University of the Aegean and several other institutions.[2]

He is an Associate Professor at the University of the Aegean in the Department of Product & Systems Design Engineering. At the University of Aegean, Dimitris established the Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory (Smart MOVE) and organized the Aegean Ro-Boat Races.

He was an early member of Marinetraffic.com where he founded the MarineTraffic R&D Labs.

European Commission[edit]

In 2018, Dimitris joined the European Commission Expert Groups on Business-to-Government (B2G) data sharing and big data sharing for official statistics (B2G4S). Additionally, he spearheaded the Task Force for Data Science and AI for the Big Data Value Association (BDVA), contributing to implementing the Big Data Value Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program. He is the National Delegate for Greece on the Horizon Europe Programme Committee (PC) for "Cluster 4: Digital, Industry, and Space."

Research work[edit]

Dimitris has authored over 150 scientific publications and has presented his work at conferences in Europe and the US. He has been included in the top 2% of scientists internationally in information systems for four consecutive years (2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022). Additionally, his paper "Addressing Cloud Computing Security Issues" is included in the top 0.1% percentile of publications internationally for 2010–2014 based on the citations it has received.[3]

Dimitris has led and participated in various research and development projects funded by the European Commission and industry, including Horizon 2020 projects such as CrexData, VesselAI, INFORE, and BigDataOcean. Notable companies like Google, Cisco, Maritech, IBM, AT&T, Signal Ocean, and Atlassian have cited his work in their patents.[4][5]

Member organizations[edit]

Dimitris is a member of several professional organizations, such as the editorial board for Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS), and a program committee member for conferences like IEEE Fusion, MDM, ACM DEBS and others. Dimitris holds an IEEE Senior Membership and is affiliated with various IEEE societies, including the IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Oceanic Engineering, and the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Societies. Additionally, he is a member of the Young Researchers Committee of the World Federation on Soft Computing and a fellow of the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology.[6]
