Elham Al Marzooqi is the UAE’s first professional female Emirati cellist.[1]

Elham started her musical journey at the age of 5 when she studied piano at her mother's music institute in Abu Dhabi (one of the first music schools to open in the Emirate). Whilst pursuing her piano college exams under the Russian syllabus, she embarked on a lifetime goal of studying the cello. Elham is known as the first female Emirati cellist, participating in countless orchestral concerts and governmental initiatives, in the UAE and abroad, as well as performing before local and foreign dignitaries. In 2021, she received the award of “HomeGROWn Artist of the Year” by independent music magazine, “Musivv”[2]. Her cello studies have included stints in the UAE and UK, where she studied cello performance under renowned cellists and pedagogues.

As a member of the NSO Symphony Orchestra, Elham is the first Emirati cellist to have performed not only once but twice with renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli in UAE at du Arena in April 2016, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the “Winter at Tantoura” Festival in February 2019. The KSA performance was broadcast live on MBC.[1]

She has also bridged Eastern and Western music by performing with renowned Syrian composer and musician Iyad Al Rimawi (to a sold-out concert in Dubai WTC in 2018) and has been featured in the YouTube documentary on Rimawi’s latest album 'Love Letters from Damascus' in 2020.

In 2019, Elham has also performed in the Middle East premiere of the “Scary Beauty”, an android led opera composed by Japanese composer Keiirchiro Shibuyu and is the first Emirati cellist to have performed in such a setting.

Elham has also performed before renowned Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman (a recipient of multiple international awards including the Grammy and Academy Award) in the event “An Evening with A.R. Rahman”. She has performed in Dubai Opera with the Emirates Community Symphonic Orchestra and 250 vocalists for the 50th anniversary of the Holy Trinity Church. She has recently taken part in the Al Ain Music Festival which was under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan. She has also performed at the gala dinner for the Global Women’s Forum Dubai 2020 – Power of Influence before dignitaries such as H.H. Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ivanka Trump and Theresa May. In 2021, she performed as a solo musician in the 9th season of “Prince of Poets” (أمير الشعراء), a popular reality television Arab poetry competition.

Since 2011, Elham has performed regularly in countless performances as an orchestral cellist with various orchestras, namely NSO Symphony Orchestra, Dubai Chamber Orchestra, Dubai Pops Orchestra, Emirates Community Symphonic Orchestra, Arabian Philharmonic Orchestra, Sharq Orchestra and Dubai Singers Orchestra. She is also an active member of the Emirati music trio “UAE Pioneers’ Musicians”. She has also been featured in various national news and magazine outlets, including The National, Zahrat Al Khaleej, Al Ittihad, Emarat Al Youm and Al Roeya, as well as having a cover feature in Kul Al Usra magazine in September 2020.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Elham has performed in various projects such as the UAE – Korean 40th Friendship Alliance project as part of the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge initiative, as well as taking part in the Zayed University Graduation video shoot, directed by renowned female Emirati director Nayla Al Khaja. She also participated in the Zayed Fraternity Award video shoot in 2021, being the only Emirati musician featured in the award ceremony.

In August 2020, Elham was accepted as a student of the Amit Peled Online Cello Academy, taught by renowned Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University professor, Amit Peled, and was one of only nine students to be accepted globally.

Since July 2021, Elham has been member of the Firdaus Orchestra, an all-female pioneering orchestra with musicians from across the Arab region.[3] After an arduous auditioning process, she was the only Emirati musician to have been chosen to join the orchestra. The Firdaus Orchestra is a visionary project between EXPO 2020 and A.R. Rahman and has made its debut during EXPO 2020. As well as performing AR Rahman’s compositions, the orchestra have performed in multiple concerts, featuring guest artists such as Anoushka Shankar and the Qawwali Orchestral Project.[3]

Elham’s musical career has also taken her to Poland, where she has recorded the "Symphony of Three. Peace. Love. Tolerance" with the Beethoven Academy Orchestra, under the baton of Diego Navarro, in March 2022. The first in musical history, this interfaith symphony was composed by Academy and Grammy Award-winning composer David Shire (for the Judaism movement), Emmy Award-winning (and Academy Award nominee) composer John Debney (for the Christianity movement), and Emirati composer Ihab Darwish (for the Islamic movement). The Symphony Of Three is produced and commissioned by Abu Dhabi Festival and co-produced by legendary film producer Robert Townson, Zofia Jeziorna and Ihab Darwish and celebrates the historic opening of the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi, a world-first interfaith complex on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi inspired by the 2019 Document on Human Fraternity.
