Gerald Charles SA (/ˈdʒɛrəld tʃɑːrlz/) is an independent, family-owned luxury watch company headquartered in Lugano, Ticino, Switzerland. The company was founded in 2000 by Gerald Genta.[1]

In 2003, Mr. Genta sold the company to the Ziviani family while remaining the company’s designer-in-chief until his death in August 2011. Maison Gerald Charles then opened up its story to reach a greater number of watch collectors and customers becoming now a well-known player in the watch industry.[2]

In 2020 the company introduced the Maestro collection, which is the brand distinguishing signature. The 20th anniversary was celebrated with a limited edition watch: the Maestro Anniversary.[3]

History[edit]

Gerald Charles was founded in January 2000 by Gerald Genta (1 May 1931 – 17 August 2011). Genta was a Swiss watch designer and artist. He wasn't new in the watch industry when he decided to found its own brand since he first started by creating timepieces for some other high-end watch manufacturers.[4]

In 2003, he let Giampaolo Ziviani take care of the brand as General Manager while remaining head of the creative process until his death in 2011. The Maison then continued producing watches in small quantities just for a niche of collectors until when a new management took it over. In 2019, Federico Ziviani, General Manager, started a new path by telling the story of the Maison to reach more customers.[5] [6]

Since 2020 Gerald Charles has been collaborating with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, the Swiss specialist in high-end movements, part of Fondation Qualité Fleurier.[7]

In 2021, the world-renowed designer Octavio Garcia started a collaboration with Gerald Charles. He worked with Gérald Charles Genta previously, so he was the best person to carry on the stylistic signature without altering the brand legacy. He's now Gerald Charles' Creative Director.[8]

Historic models[edit]

  • Museum Collection: a number of exclusive pieces designed and created by Mr. Genta between 2000 and 2011.[9]
  • Maestro.99 Tourbillon[10]
  • Maestro GC39[11]
  • Maestro Anniversary Edition[12]
  • Premier 2021: a limited edition of the Maestro 2.0 e 3.0, featuring an 18-karat rose gold case and a green dial.[13]

Maestro collection[edit]

The Maestro Collection, introduced in 2020 features the Maestro case.[14]

Gerald Charles Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin[edit]

The Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin is crafted in stainless steel, 8mm of thinness and is water-resistant to 100 metres. Whether in black or green, it's also available with a blue dial and strap matching with an 18-karat rose gold Maestro case.[15]

Gerald Charles Maestro 3.0 Chronograph[edit]

The Maestro 3.0 Chronograph is made of stainless steel or titanium and has advanced levels of shock resistance too. The Maestro 3.0 features a squarer and more octagonal case with three counters at 3, 6 and 9.[16]

Gerald Charles Maestro GC Sport[edit]

The GC Sport is a watch in polished titanium. To guarantee comfort in the movement, the watch's screw-down crown has been moved from the right to the left side of the case. Besides the blue dial version, other 2 limited edition versions have been added: the GC Sport Clay and the GC Sport Grass, their grained dials remind of the different kind of tennis courts.[17] [18]

Gerald Charles Maestro 8.0 Squelette[edit]

The Maestro 8.0 Squelette watch was created by the watch designer Octavio Garcia. It combines the classic case based on the Maestro 2.0 ultra-thin with a new and unique open-worked movement and a micro-rotor architecture. It's the first skeleton watch of the Maestro Collection. Available in 2 colours and also offered as a GC.8.0 Gem-Set, a series of 4 limited-edition in different colors and gems set by hand by Geneva-based gem-setter Salanitro Genève.[19]

Gerald Charles Maestro 9.0 Tourbillon[edit]

The Maestro 9.0 Tourbillon is a limited edition of 50 pieces. The watch was created taking inspiration from an original Maestro flying tourbillon created in 2005 by Gerald Charles Genta. Designed in collaboration with Octavio Garcia, the tourbillon cage in Titanium is delivered in the shape of the swooping Gerald Charles logo. This model is also available in a gem-set diamonds and a gem-set sapphires edition.[20]
