Himanshu Pathak, FNA, FNASc,[1] FNAAS,[2] FAvH,[3] FAScT, (born February 2, 1965) is the Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education[4] and the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Pathak, who is recognized for his work in the areas of abiotic stress, climate change, and soil science, was elected a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences, India, the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany.

Biography[edit]

Himanshu Pathak was born on February 2, 1965, in Purulia, West Bengal. He attended his local Gopalpur Swami Gyanananda Vidyapith from 1975 to 1980 and Dubrajpur Uttarayan Vidyayatan in Bankura, West Bengal, from 1980 to 1982. He joined Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1882 and graduated with a BSc (Ag.) degree in 1986. He received his master's degree in soil science and agricultural chemistry from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), in 1988, as well as his PhD in 1992.

Soil science, climate change, and environmental pollution are some of his research interests. He started working as a scientist at the IARI in 1992. Pathak underwent national and international training and experiences in places like the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research in Germany (2004–2005) and the University of Essex in the UK (1996–1997), among many others. Pathak worked as a co-facilitator for the rice-wheat consortium at IRRI in India from 2006 to 2009. He was also a Professor and the Principal Scientist at the IARI up until 2016.[5] Pathak was the Director of the National Rice Research Institute of Odisha from 2016 to 2020.[6] He held the position of director of Maharashtra's National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management[7] from 2020 to 2022. Pathak was appointed as Secretary of the Department of Agriculture Research and Education[8] (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research[9] (ICAR) in 1st August 2022.

Legacy[edit]

Pathak evaluated Resource-Conserving Technologies (RCTs) and Integrated Crop Management Systems to boost resource use efficiency and farmers' income in rice-wheat systems. His research interests included soil science, climate change, and environmental pollution. He also contributed significantly to the IPCC's 5th Assessment Report and its Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories.[10] According to Pathak's calculations of the carbon footprints of several Indian food products, dietary changes can lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. He and his study team has evaluated the amount of air pollution that crop leftovers in India emit,[11][12][13][14] and it has been shown that rice straw may be used to improve soil fertility when nitrogen fertilizer is added to it.[15][16]

With more than 22,200 citations, h-index of 75, and i-10 score of 230, he has published more than 200 research papers and 50 reviews in international publications.[17] He has also authored 20 books, 90 book chapters, 35 popular articles, 40 technical bulletins, 9 policy papers, and 90 technical bulletins. According to Stanford University in the USA, he is among the top 2% of agricultural experts worldwide. According to research.com, he was ranked 365th overall and 5th in India for Plant Science and Agronomy. Additionally, he has assisted a number of students with their master's and doctorate thesis. He has taken part in over 70 International Symposiums and Conferences across 27 nations. He has delivered keynote addresses and facilitated discussions at more than 150 national and international conferences.
