Hold On is a 2023 computer-animated short film created by Gabriel Bermudez under the artistic name of Gabriel Berm. The short film, with a duration of two minutes and twenty-four seconds, follows the story of Matt, a 25-year-old immigrant residing in the United States of America. He receives a phone call from his sister, Callie, informing him that their father has passed away in their home country. The short film completed production in early 2023 and premiered at Universidad Veritas in Costa Rica on August 24th of the same year. Initially conceived as a graduation project for the director, Hold On went on to be part of the official selection at the Barcelona Indie Filmmakers Festival (BARCIFF) in Spain, the Khabarovsk International Animation Film Festival "Animur" in Eastern Russia, and was featured in the program La Animación Iberoamericana at the Animasyros International Animation Festival on the island of Syros, Greece, which is the largest animation festival in Greece and one of the 20 largest of its kind in Europe.

Plot[edit]

Years after immigrating to the United States, Matt (Gabriel Berm) grapples with the notion of family. A call from his sister, Callie (Callie Morken), becomes the catalyst for a realization: he learns that family transcends borders and manifests in varied forms. The deepest connections endure physical separation, teaching Matt that what truly matters is the unbreakable bond they share, echoing louder than any distance.

Production[edit]

The short film was produced as an individual project by Gabriel Berm using his personal laptop. It was created using Autodesk Maya, ZBrush, and Blender. The project took 13 months to complete from preproduction to its release. The film counted on the help of software engineer Callie Morken to voice the character. For the score, it was composed by Gabriel Berm using GarageBand, and for the start and end song, it was performed live for the short film by the Big Band Juvenil of the Instituto Nacional de la Música Costa Rica. The short was textured, lit, groomed, and rendered using Blender Cycles render engine, taking over 170 hours to finish rendering.
