Kimia Eslah (1979- ) is a Canadian author and essayist.[1][2] She writes about the experiences of racialized women and queer women of colour in Canada.[3]


Her first novel The Daughter Who Walked Away was longlisted by The Miramichi Reader.[4].

Her second novel Sister Seen, Sister Heard was listed in the CBC Books' article 26 Books to Read for Pride Month.[5]

She writes personal essays about misogyny, rape, oppression, discrimination, and her experiences surviving childhood trauma and living with mental illness.[6]

Early life[edit]

Kimia Eslah was born in Shiraz, Iran. She lived as a refugee in India with her family. As a child, she moved to Canada. In her teens, she identified as queer, and produced five editions of her zine Muff Divers.[7]

Work[edit]

Her first novel The Daughter Who Walked Away is the story of three generations of Iranian women. The book explores the impact of childhood trauma on each woman's emotional development and her capacity to parent. Her second novel Sister Seen, Sister Heard centers on the emotional growth of the four adult members of the Ghasemi family. They struggle to support their youngest member, Farah Ghasemi, who has been attacked on campus. The book explores attitudes about sexual violence against women.[8]
