Marginalia (Association for Human Rights Marginalia) is a Bulgarian non-governmental organization for human rights and online news platform, founded on May 15, 2014 by Iuliana Metodieva and Emil Cohen and others.[1][2][3]

History[edit]

Association for Human Rights Marginalia was founded on May 15, 2014 by a committee composed by Iuliana Metodieva, Marta Metodieva, Mitko Novkov, Svetla Encheva, Tatiana Vaksberg and Emil Cohen of Bulgarian Helsinki Committee.[2][4] Since it's establishment, Marginalia has been providing platforms to marginalized groups in Bulgaria by organizing forums and other events, publishing news articles, analyses and other information on their own website.[5] Since 2016 Marginalia organizes educational short documentary film workshops with students, publishing the finished videos on their YouTube channel, Marginalia Youth Channel.[6]

In November, 2020 Kristian Kovachev started a podcast about less known topics in Bulgarian history on Marginalia's main YouTube channel.[7]

Objectives[edit]

Marginalia serves as a platform for more than 300 authors, including university and school teachers, writers and public figures for analyses, news, articles, commentaries and other media materials. On the association's website maintains a page for international law and literature.[8]

In 2020 Marginalia joined several organizations in the one-year project 'Media Independence and Access to Information in Relation to the COVID-19 Pandemic in Bulgaria'. The project involved analysis of the lack of reliable information in the country, conducted through personal interviews with focus groups. The final results were presented at an event in Brussels.[5]

Marginalia took part as one of the more than 30 civil society organizations in the joint initiatives of Equal BG in 2021 under the motto 'It depends on us!' (Bulgarian: "От нас зависи!") as a media and freedom of speech platform.[9]

International forums[edit]

In 2018 Marginalia organized the 'Sofia Says No to Hate Speech and Extremism' International Forum in partnership with Europe 2018 Project of Sofia Municipality and the Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria Shalom. The forum was visited by several figures of great importance, such as the US Ambassador in Bulgaria at the time Eric Rubin, Zagreb's Mayor Milan Bandich and the Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandukova. The aim of the forum was to demonstrate that Bulgaria's civil society and government are united in their will to counter hate speech and extremism.[10]

In 2019 Marginalia organized and hosted a workshop on enhanced methods of teaching the Holocaust for 22 history teachers from Sofia Municipality schools. The association also participated along with other organizations in the 'Authentic Religious Identity and Sustainable Peace' forum organized by the interfaith group Fourm for Interreligious Dialogue and Partnership.[11]

Open letters[edit]

Together with Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, authors from Marginalia and other professors, scientists, translators and others signed an open letter titled 'Open letter to human rights defenders' in connection to a case of discrimination against a 22-year-old girl awaiting lung transplant under the Health Insurance Fund, available only to persons under 18.[5]

In 2018 Marginalia was one of the 12 NGO signatories of a stance against racism and hatred. The declaration was purposed in light of the events of a Bulgaria-England football match, where local fans made offensive gestures against visitors. The NGOs insist that zero tolerance for racism precludes any form of co-operation with far-right political formations.[12]
