Mastering the Business of Acting (MBA) is an American online education acting course and web series that specializes in teaching students the business-side of the acting industry.[1] MBA was launched in 2021 by actor-turned-manager Chi Muoi Lo, who also serves as the primary instructor of the course.[1][2][3] The series was shot over 14 weeks in the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood. Alongside Lo, the series was produced by Stanley Yung and Kevin D'Arcy with Yung also serving as the director for all seven episodes.

MBA features several film and television industry guests, such as casting director John Frank Levey (ER, Shameless, The West Wing), agent Todd Eisner (A3 Artists Agency, Innovative Artists Talent & Literary Agency, Inc.), television director Nancy Hower (Teachers, Quick Draw), and actress Karen Malina White (Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder).[4]

Background[edit]

Lo, an alumnus of the American Conservatory Theater, was a child actor before he began his professional acting career in 1989.[5] He starred in guest roles in television and supporting roles in film before eventually landing a lead role in the television series Vanishing Son in 1994.[6]

He got into writing, directing, and producing with his feature film Catfish in Black Bean Sauce released in 2000.[7] Since 2002, Lo has owned the talent management company Allen Edelman Management.[8] Notable actors managed by Allen Edelman Management are Karen Malina White, Steven Krueger, Richard Whiten, Tyler Christopher, and Kieu Chinh.[9][10][11][12]

He claimed that acting instructors failed to teach practical business knowledge to aspiring actors.[5] This inspired him to write and produce MBA.[5] Lo made the program with the intention to share the advantages he has learned in his career with aspiring and working actors.[13]

Episodes[edit]

The series contains seven episodes with a total runtime of twelve hours.[14]

Each episode of the series is set on a stage and consists of a pre-recorded lecture given by Lo to a group of actors. Lo often interacts with the actors by asking them questions or using them in simulated industry settings.[15] The program does not cover acting skills but covers auditioning, pitching, talent representation, and the business side of acting.[16]

Since 2004, Lo has taught an acting class called Audition & Camera Acting Master Class, and the final series of the classes were recorded and used as the basis of Mastering the Business of Acting.[1]
