Michał Wszoła (MD, PhD) – born in 1974 is a Polish medical doctor, general surgeon and transplantologist. Professor of Medicine.

Originator and co-author of the 3D bionic pancreas. Chairman of the BIONIC Consortium Council and Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Foundation of Research and Science Development. Author of a new medical procedure - endoscopic transplantation of pancreatic islets under the gastric mucosa..[1][2]

Education[edit]

In 2005 - a doctoral degree (PhD) in medicine for the dissertation: „Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and ischemic heart disease in hemodialysis patients“

From 2001 to 2007 - residency internship in general surgery at the Department of General and Transplantation Surgery at Warsaw Medical University.

In 2008 - intership at San Rafaele Ospedale, Milan Italy - training in the field of transplantation of islets of Langerhans

From 2008 to 2010 - internship in transplantology at the Department of General and Transplantation Surgery at Warsaw Medical University.

In 2014, he obtained the degree of Doctor habilitatus in medicine on the basis of the scientific and technical achievement entitled: "Evaluation of factors influencing the early and long-term results of kidney transplantation".[3]

In 2023, he was awarded the title of Professor in medicine on the basis of demonstrated professional, scientific, research achievements and teaching activities.[4]

Professional career[edit]

For many years he has been engaged in endoscopic gastrointestinal tract diagnostic and treatment procedures as well in transplant procedures: pancreases, pancreatic islets, kidneys and liver transplantations. He participated in the first pancreatic islet transplantation in Poland (2008), the first Pancreas Transplant Alone (2010) and the first exchange of kidney pairs between family donors (2015)[5]

Combination of his two passions - transplantology and endoscopy - led to the creation of a new method of mini-invasive treatment of complicated diabetes - endoscopic transplantation of pancreatic islets under the gastric mucosa. In 2013, Michal Wszola performed the first such procedure in the world.[1]

The knowledge of the problems associated with organ shortage for transplantation allowed him to create a concept of bioprinting a bionic pancreas. He is currently working on it together with the Foundation of Research and Science Development, Warsaw Medical University, Warsaw University of Technology, the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Center for Advanced Technologies of Adam Mickiewicz University and the MediSpace Medical Centre.[6][7]

Clinical work[edit]

  • 2001 to 2016 - the Department of General and Transplant Surgery at the Medical University of Warsaw
  • 2011 to 2016 - the Head of the Pancreatic Islet Isolation Laboratory at the Department of General and Transplant Surgery of the Medical University of Warsaw[8]
  • 2013 to 2016 - Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly MEDtube Science [8]
  • Founder of the international portal, a multimedia platform for sharing medical knowledge MEDtube[9]
  • Co-founder of multimedia platform medizzy.com[10]

Since 2016, Medical Director of Medispace Medical Centre [3]

Since 2019, CEO of Polbionica Inc., a biotech spin-off company producing biomaterials and laboratory devices. The company goal is to conduct a clinical trial with a 3D-bioprinted bionic pancreas in patients with chronic pancreatitis and type 1 diabetes.[11]

Publications[edit]

Professor Wszola is the author and co-author of many scientific publications (IF = 104, h-index = 20) in the fields of pancreatic islets transplantation and 3D bioprinting [3][12]. He is also co-author of 6 patent applications.
