National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, an annual national day which takes place on February 22, a day dedicated to raising awareness of heart valve disease. Heart valve disease affects as many as 11.6 million Americans.[1] Heart valve Disease Awareness Day is nationally recognized on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Health Observances Calendar.[2]

Background[edit]

Heart valve disease is a deadly condition that causes 25,000 deaths in the United States each year.[3] Heart Valve Disease Day is dedicated to increasing recognition of valve disease symptoms and risk factors, improving rates of detection and treatment, and improving patient outcomes.[4] The day aims to educate patients, caregivers, and the public, and reduce the number of people whose lives are adversely affected by heart valve disease. In 2019, over 65 partners, led by the Alliance for Aging Research, participated in National Heart Valve Disease Day.[5][6] Partners include Men's Health Network, National Council on Aging, Northwestern Medicine, WebMD, Women's Heart Foundation, and more.[5]

Past Activities and Events[edit]

In past years, partners have hosted and participated in a variety of events, social media activities, media outreach efforts, and other activities to raise awareness.[7][8] Past events have included an educational briefing on Capitol Hill,[9] ringing of the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange,[10] events at heart and vascular institutes, and more.
