Nicholas Jay Deml (born May 14, 1987) is an American attorney, former U.S. intelligence officer, and the current Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Corrections.[1][2][3] Deml was appointed Commissioner of the Department of Corrections in November 2021 by Vermont Governor Phil Scott (R).[4] He previously served as an intelligence officer in the Directorate of Operations at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), as an aide on the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, and as an aide to U.S. Senate Assistant Majority Leader Richard J. Durbin (D-IL).[5][6] Deml was born and raised in La Crosse, Wisconsin. During his tenure at CIA, Deml served in Afghanistan.
