The Radiation Research Society is a professional association of scientists and physician-scientists committed to the study and advancement of the radiation sciences.[1]

History[edit]

The concept for the Radiation Research Society originated during a symposium held at Oberlin College, and shortly thereafter an organizing committee was assembled with Gioacchino Failla elected Chairman. The Committee proceeded to prepare the constitution and by-laws of the Radiation Research Society, ballots were mailed for the election of the first officers, and legally incorporated in the District of Columbia in March 1952. R.E. Zirkle was elected as the first RRS president; the first RRS meeting was held in Iowa City, June 1953. "The Radiation Research Society is perhaps unique in that it is expressly organized to bring together scientists of widely different backgrounds in a highly specialized field —— on a perfectly equal basis."[2]

Meetings and workshops[edit]

The RRS annual meeting features both proffered and invited study presentations from all fields of the radiation sciences, emphasizing biology, chemistry, medicine and physics. The meeting includes award and lectures, invited symposia dedicated to particular topics of current interest, refresher courses and workshops; along with poster presentations that corresponded to oral presentations. Approximately 1,000 researchers are typically in attendance at each meeting.[3]

RRS members support and attend the International Congress of Radiation Research (ICRR) meeting.[4] These Congresses occur every four years. Past meetings have been held in Burlington, Vermont (1958); Harrogate, England (1962); Cortina, Italy (1966); Evian, France (1970); Seattle, Washington (1974); Tokyo, Japan (1979); Amsterdam, The Netherlands (1983); Edinburgh, Scotland (1987); Toronto, Canada (1991); Würzburg, Germany (1995); Dublin, Ireland (1999), Brisbane, Australia (2003); San Francisco, California (2007), Warsaw, Poland (2011); Kyoto, Japan (2015).

Publication[edit]

RRS publishes Radiation Research[1] a monthly peer-reviewed journal, which contains original studies in biology, chemistry, medicine and physics dealing with the effect of radiation and associated topics. Other related subjects of interest include techniques of dosimetry and instrumentation, isotope techniques and the action of chemical modifiers contributing to the study of radiation effects.[5]
