Career[edit]

Bhattacharya has considerable industrial experience, including 34 years of experience at Andrew Yule and Company[8] in sales and marketing, design and product development.[6] He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of International Conference on Fan Noise, Technology and Numerical Methods 2015,[9] organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He was appointed as the director (planning) of Andrew Yule and Company for a period of five years in 2018[10] upon being recommended by the Public Enterprises Selection Board, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India. He was nominated as a director of the New Town Telecom Infrastructure Development Company in 2018 and he continued in that position for less than a year.[11] In 2020, he was recommended by the Public Enterprises Selection Board for appointment as the chairman and managing director of Andrew Yule and Company[12] and he assumed charge on 1 September 2020 after the proposal for appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in May 2020.[13]

During his tenure, the tea exports of the company grew by 431%[14] and received wider recognition[15][16] including a congratulatory message from the Prime Minister of India.[17] The MIM Heritage Tea Bungalow was inaugurated by Mahendra Nath Pandey, Union Minister for Heavy Industries, in presence of Bhattacharya in May 2022 and it was expected that the MIM Tea Resort, upon completion by August 2023, would open up to be a major tourist destination in Darjeeling, West Bengal.[15] He also serves as the chairman of Tide Water Oil Company India Limited,[18][19] a company known for the Veedol brand of industrial lubricants.[20] In July 2018, he was appointed an additional director on the board of Webfil[6] and also served as the chairman of Hooghly Printing Company,[21] a Government of India Enterprise.

On 13 November 2020, he became a director of Veedol International.[22] In June 2021, the company approved the closure of the Electrical - Kolkata Operations Division of Andrew Yule and Company,[23] and this elicited an expression of disapproval from the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Enterprise, Government of West Bengal.[24] Bhattacharya's comments were solicited by the Telegraph but he did not publicly comment on the closure.[25] The Azadi Amrut Chai line of tea products was launched by Mahendra Nath Pandey in presence of Bhattacharya in October 2021 to commemorate the 75th year of Independence of India.[26] In March 2023, the company reported net sales of ₹ 81.14 Crores, up by over 30% as compared to the figure of March 2022.[27] In August 2023, the company announced plans to re-launch the Tea Machinery Division as well as the Projects Division with emphasis on prospective air pollution and water pollution control projects.[28] His tenure as the chairman and managing director of the company will end on 31 August 2023.[29][30]
