The Bucknellian is the weekly independent student newspaper of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Established as the Orange and the Blue in 1897, The Bucknellian is the oldest student-run publication at the university.[1]

The Bucknellian is printed by the Sunbury Daily Item.[1]

Publishing once per week during class sessions, The Bucknellian is editorially independent of Bucknell University.[2]

History[edit]

The Orange and the Blue was founded in March 1897, and was published by the Lewisburg Journal,[3] now a part of the Milton Standard-Journal.[4]

In 1915, the publication's name was changed to The Bucknellian. The editors at the time cited that the name change would "make the paper itself more representative."[5]

The paper published a special edition in March 1936 surrounding a flood that caused significant damage to campus and delayed classes.[6]

Philip Roth, while a student at Bucknell, published for a competing publication Et Cetera, which was often critical of The Bucknellian.[7]

In December 1983, over a lack of applications for the position of Editor, the paper announced its final edition in an editorial and accompanying article.[8] However, the paper resumed publication in February 1984 after three applications for the position were received.[9]

In 2000, the paper apologized for a "grave production error" in which a Holocaust denial advertisement ran in the online edition of the publication.[10]

A 2008 article entitled "Sexual assaults increase" won a first place 2009 Keystone Award from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association.[11]

In 2013, The Bucknellian provided exclusive coverage on the use of a racial slur on the university's associated radio station, WVBU-FM. That incident ultimately resulted in the expulsion of three students.[12]

Original reporting by The Bucknellian was cited as evidence in a 2021 federal lawsuit against Bucknell by a former student.[13][14]
