Thomas Crane (filmmaker)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Thomas Crane is an American musician and filmmaker[1]. He is best known for music video production, directing videos for Todd La Torre of Queensryche [2], Saliva [3], Kamelot [4], Love the Hate [5] and several other artists. He has directed, filmed and edited over 100 music videos, under his company killDevil Films.[6]

Career[edit]

Marion Crane (2008-current)[edit]

Crane is the vocalist/guitarist/songwriter for Marion Crane, a band he founded in Jacksonville, Florida in 2008.[7] The band signed with Full Effect Records in 2012 and released their full-length debut album "The New Religion". [8] Crane's first music videos were for his own band, releasing a zombie-themed video for the title-track, that was filmed in downtown Jacksonville. [9] The band released the E.P., "Rock is Dead...and I Know Where The Bodies are Buried" in 2014.[10] After multiple videos for his own band, Crane began producing music videos for other artists. [11]

As a solo artist, he released the single "Spook House" in 2019.[12]

killDevil Films (2014-current)[edit]

Crane founded killDevil Films in 2014[13] and began producing music videos for other artists as well as narrative releases. [14] In 2018, he wrote and directed the short-film "Halloween Party"[15], a low-budget 38 minute horror-thriller.[16] The film premiered on October 30, 2018 in at the Villagio Cinemas in Tampa, Florida to a sold out crowd. [17] The film would go on to win The Florida Spotlight Award at the 2019 Spooky Empire Horror Convention.

In 2018, he documented Kamelot on their "Shadows Over North America" tour, producing a music video for "Mindfall Remedy" from the footage.[18] In 2020, his "Let It Go" video for Jasmine Cain was nominated for the Best Music Video Award at the Josie Music Awards in Dollywood. [19] 2021 marked the beginning of an ongoing collaboration with Todd La Torre of Queensryche, with Crane directing three videos off of La Torre's solo album "Rejoice In the Suffering", which included "Crossroads to Insanity"[20], "Hellbound and Down"[21], and "Vexed"[22]. With "Vexed", La Torre and Crane presented a video with intense footage showing societal unrest across the globe.[23] La Torre commented:

"'Vexed' highlights the unfortunate reality that many nations and its people are facing. Past and present parallels of civil rights movements, social injustices, and the uprisings surrounding geopolitical landscapes are woven throughout the exposé, displaying overt footage from various countries with no exclusivity. Despite its thought-provoking and unfiltered content, Thomas Crane of killDevil Films really drove home the vision that Craig and I wanted to convey."[24]

That same year, Crane also directed a music video for Saliva and the documentary "Every Six Seconds: Twenty Years Later",[25] marking the anniversary of the band's landmark debut album.

Also in 2021, Crane directed the video "Solid Ground" for Love the Hate.[26] The video was filmed at The Outlaw Mansion, an historic landmark in Mobile, Alabama, which has been called "Alabama's Most Haunted House". [27] Soon after filming, the mansion burned down, with the music video serving as the last footage of the notorious property. [28]

In the same year, his video "Counterfeits of Control" for Mature Musical Pictures, won the Best Music Video Award at the 4th Dimension Independent Film Festival.[29]

Style[edit]

Crane's work is known to be horror-inspired and typically contains dark themes.[30] A review of "Halloween Party" stated, "There are clearly echoes of 'Psycho' peppered throughout the movie and even the frequent switching between colour and black and white helps further emphasise the on-screen emotion, drama and more importantly the slowly-engaging fear and ultimate twists and turns that audiences follow as the story progresses."[31] Another reviewer called the film "rich in atmosphere and dark in tone". [32] He has cited David Fincher, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock and Quentin Tarantino as main influences.[33] Commenting on the influence of the horror genre, Crane said, "I love the whole genre, from the great films to the bad cheesy gorefest ones, but my absolute favorites are the classics: Halloween, The Shining, Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Se7en, The Exorcist, Jaws, Black Christmas, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scream, and A Nightmare on Elm Street". [34]
