Thomas Theologou (born 1971) is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Consultant in the Department of Cardiac Surgery of the Cardiocentro Ticino, Lugano, Switzerland.[2][3] His practice areas include: cardiac surgery, aortic surgery, congenital, thoracic, vascular, electrophysiology/arrhythmia, and valve diseases.[4] He teaches a course in the Biomedical Sciences of USI, the Università della Svizzera Italiana.[5]

Research[edit]

He has carried out research in cardiac physiology and coronary circulation, cardiac pharmacology and beta blockers in dilated cardiomyopathy, inflammatory mediators and cardiopulmonary bypass machine, and endogenous cardiac stem cell and myocardial regeneration in heart failure.[6][7][8][9][10] He has suggested that preoperative IABP use may be beneficial on mortality and morbidity in specific high-risk patients groups undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery.[11] In another study he demonstrated that patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, showed no prognostic significance on multivariable analysis.[12]

Education and specialty training[edit]

Theologou was born in Hassfurt, Germany but grew up and completed his secondary education in Athens, Greece.

He studied medicine in the Medical School of the University of Trieste, Italy (MD, BSc, 1992–1998). He did a general surgery residency in East Kent Deanery in the UK between 2002 and 2006, and received a Master of Science in cardiothoracic surgery (MSc, DIC) from the Imperial College London in 2004. He was registrar in cardiac surgery in Nottingham, and Liverpool, UK, between 2006 and 2008. He trained in Paediatric Cardiac Surger at the Geneva University Hospitals, Switzerland between 2008 and 2010 (mMBA). He worked in cardiothoracic surgery at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital between 2011 and 2019. He obtained a MPhil (Master of Philosophy) from the Liverpool John Moores University in 2015, an FRCS CTh (Fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery) in 2018, and a CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in cardiothoracic surgery in North West Deanery, UK (2019)..[4]

He received a habilitation (libera docenza) from the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in 2021.[13]

Leadership positions[edit]

1st Vice President of the European Society of Surgical Research 50th European society of surgical research (ESSR) 2014–2016.[14][15]

President of the 50th ESSR Congress, 2015, Liverpool, UK.[15][16]

President of the Hellenic Community of the Canton of Ticino, Switzerland, 2020.[17][18]
