triple j Unearthed is an ongoing platform designed to discover and nurture upcoming Australian artists. The project began in 1995 as an offshoot an offshoot of the national Australian broadcaster triple j. It originally focused on regional areas but now covers all of Australia. Many of these discoveries have gone on to achieve significant critical and commercial success. Some, such as Grinspoon, Killing Heidi, and Missy Higgins, have even been successful enough to receive commercial radio airplay. The Unearthed competition was inspired by the success of a talent search on SBS program Nomad called "Pick Me". This segment, co-produced by Triple J, discovered a trio from Newcastle called the "Innocent Criminals", who later gained international fame under the name Silverchair.[citation needed]

In recent years the platform has played a significant role in the discovery and career development of artists such as The Kid Laroi[1], Tones & I, Gang of Youths, Mallrat and The Rubens, among others.

History[edit]

Touring Competition[edit]

triple j Unearthed launched for the very first time in 1995. The concept was originally conceived as a way of discovering new Australian talent from regional areas around Australia where the Australian Broadcasting Commission were launching new radio transmitters. Artists were required to send in demos directly to the radio station.

Ultimately each state would have a 'winner'. These included artists such as Grinspoon who won the first instalment of the competition[2] in 1995 in Lismore with a casette tape demo of their song 'Sickfest'[3]

triple j Unearthed Website[edit]

Launched for the first time in 2006, the initial idea for the triple j Unearthed website was inspired by an online initiative of radio station CBC Canada called New Music Canada where the platform captured new songs from artists to surface them for an online audience. The format of a touring competition was considered to have worked when the competition arrived at the right time at the right place but the arrival of the website was designed to allow artists to submit their music at whatever point they were ready. The first triple j Unearthed producer Janine Googan did the entirety of the listening and moderation of music before other moderators arrived such as Dom Alessio, Vijay Khurana, Steph Hughes and Nicole Cheek.

In 2008 triple j Unearthed began to form new partnerships with music festivals that allowed the platform to run competitions around the country. Winning artists performed at the major festivals around Australia and similarly the high school age competition Unearthed High launched that year.

Digital Radio[edit]

On 5 October 2011, Triple J Unearthed (as of 2022-styled triple j unearthed) was launched as a digital radio station as well as a mobile app. The digital radio station allowed the platform to editorially support more music through 24 hour radio playlisting.

Competitions[edit]

While triple j Unearthed originally launched as a travelling competition with individual winners in each Australian state or territory it would later change to run multiple competitions throughout each year. These competitions varied between opportunities to perform at music festivals, perform support slots for touring artists, remix competitions and partnerships with creatives to have music videos created for the winning artists, for example. The most significant competitions run through the platform are Unearthed High[4], their high school age artist competition and DIY Supergroup, a competition where artists are required to download samples and use them to create new songs.

Unearthed High[edit]

Unearthed High is triple j Unearthed's annual competition in search of Australia's best high school aged artist, band or musician. The competition format sees around 4 - 5 weeks of competition open period followed by an announcement of finalists and an eventual winner. In its earlier iterations triple j presenters and staff would visit the school of the winning student where they would put on a concert. From 2015 triple j still visited the school of the winning artist but rather than putting on a concert, they surprised the winning student in their school. In recent years the competition has seen over 1,000 entries from Australian high school students[5].

From 2015 onwards the prize for winning Unearthed is the financial and logistical support for the winning artist to record their next single.

Previous winners and finalists have included artists such as The Kid Laroi, Genesis Owusu, George Alice[6], Hockey Dad and Gretta Ray

As well as the broader competition, each year the Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative sees triple j Unearthed searching for the best high school age First Nations artist. The winner of this competition has received prizes such as industry mentorship and a songwriting workshop at their school. Winners have included artists such as Becca Hatch[7], Tia Gostelow and Aodhan.
