WWE Live in Japan was a special edition WWE supershow of which took place on February 4 and 5 of 2005 and aired on February 7, 10, 12, and 13th of 2005 from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan (marketed as Tokyo, Japan in the broadcasts).

Production[edit]

Background[edit]

WWE Live in Japan was WWE's first ever televised event, which consisted of their Raw and Smackdown brands along with their supplementary programs WWE Heat and WWE Velocity. Prior to taping Raw and Smackdown in 2005, WWE had mixed success with doing shows in Japan. After co-promoting shows with All Japan Pro Wrestling, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and Super World of Sports, WWE did their own tour in May 1994 in Yokohama and Nagoya, Japan which despite some big name talent didn't draw too well. WWE didn't return to Japan for almost 8 years until March 1 of 2002 when they did a house show at the Yokohama Arena which was sold out within hours of going on sale and was headlined by The Rock taking on Chris Jericho in an undisputed title match. The show was a critical success and prompted WWE to continue doing house shows in the country which led to WWE taping special episodes Raw and Smackdown in 2005 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Weeks before the taping, it was also announced that Fuji TV would be involved in the production of the shows. The tapings would be part of a longer tour which consisted of WWE doing a combined Raw and Smackdown house show at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 1 before taping each respective show on February 4 and 5 in Japan while Raw did a house show at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul, South Korea before going to the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska for another combined Raw and Smackdown house show on February 6.
