Wang Toppidrett (ʋɑŋ tɒpɨdrett, styled as WANG Toppidrett) is a private Norwegian upper secondary school. It is run and managed by WANGToppidrett AS, which in 2021 owned 6 different sports schools (toppidrett) and 1 academic school (studiespesialiserende).

History[edit]

WANG was founded by Peder Wang in 1907, and originally offered studies in administration and economics. After Peder Wang died in 1938, the grandfather of the 2021 headmaster took over. His name was Bjarne Juel Lae. During mr. Lae's time as headmaster, the school expanded and offered several other courses.

In 1974 Ingar Lae, the son of Bjarne Juel Lae, became headmaster. In 1984 he cooperated with the skiing and footbal club Lyn, and WANG started offering football, other athletics, and sprinting from 1989. The section of the school that offered these sports thereby changed its name to WANG Toppidrett.

In 1994, trough Reform 94, the other courses vanished from the Norwegian school system. After this, WANG also offered normal academic courses: Studiespesialisering. This course is under WANG Videregående or WANG Studiespesialiserende, which only exists in the Oslo school.

In 2007, when WANG had existed for a century, the son of Ingar Lae, Vilhelm Lae, became headmaster of the schools.

Organization[edit]

The courses[edit]

WANG offers two courses: Toppidrett and Studiespesialiserende (commonly spoken about as "studiespes").

Toppidrett is for those who have a talent in sports, and every school offers a different set of sports. These have a "sportssjef" (chief of sports) and several trainers. The sports accept a given amount of students every year, but those whose sport is not given a special line can choose "Basis". Here, they train for their own sports but with a trainer who is experienced enough to help out. The Toppidrett students are given the same academic opportunities as the Studiespesialisering students, but Toppidrett students start some school days with training from 8:00.

Studiespesialisering is for those who do not want to start the day with training. They are offered the same as the Toppidrett students, except that they do not get the training bit.

Studiespesialisering is not available other places than in Oslo.

Every school has their own headmaster/headmistress.
