Stresová situácia - napríklad rozchod - môže spustiť kaskádu stresových hormónov, ktoré spôsobujú dobre-organizované fyziologické zmeny.[edit]
"Boj alebo útek" reakcia sa týka fyziologickej reakcie na stres, ktorá je vyvolaná uvoľňovaním hormónov, ktoré pripravujú telo, aby buď zostalo a vysporiadalo sa s hrozbou, alebo aby utieklo do bezpečia. Reakciu "boj alebo utek" prvýkrát opísal americký fyziolog Walter Cannon v 20. rokoch 20. storočia.
Sympatický nervový systém (skratka SNS) vysiela impulzy do žliaz a hladkých svalov a hovorí nadobličke, aby uvoľňovala epinefrín (adrenalín) a norepinefrín (noradrenalín) do krvného obehu. Tieto "stresové hormóny" spôsobujú v tele niekoľko zmien vrátane • Rapidne búšenie srdca
