'Iipay, also known as Northern Diegueño, are the indigenous people of central San Diego County, California, called 'Emat 'Iipay (The 'Iipay Nation) in their language, 'Iipay aa. There are five 'Iipay tribal reservations: Barona, Inaja-Cosmit, Mesa Grande, San Pasqual, and Santa Ysabel.
The 'Iipay territory spans from Palomar Mountain in the north to San Diego, California in the south; from Oceanside, California in the west to the Salton Sea in the east.
The 'Iipay people belong to the 'Iipay-Tiipay-Kumeyaay Nation.
'Iipay Language
'Iipay, along with Tiipay and Kumeyaay or Kumia, share a Yuman-based language which has three dialects. There are an estimated 25 'Iipay-Tiipay-Kumeyaay speakers. Presently, there is no standardized orthography for the 'Iipay language. Mesa Grande and Barona have published their own perspective dictionaries.
