History
In 1972, Argentina-born Carlos Ventin opened C.A. Ventin Architect in Simcoe, Ontario. The firm specialized in recycling condemned heritage buildings by upgrading their functionality to current standards while retaining their distinctive period-architecture features. The firm’s name was changed in 2000 to The Ventin Group, Architects to reflect the firm’s growing staff count, and, with Ventin’s retirement in 2004, to +VG Architects Ltd., to reflect the firm’s growth to other areas of practice. Paul Sapounzi, President and Managing Principal, was born in Toronto and joined the firm in 1990 after graduating from the University of Waterloo, where he won the Prix de Rome and the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal of Scholarly Excellence. He was appointed to the College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2020.
In addition to Paul Sapounzi, there are eight other Principals—Kevin Church, Nicole Crabtree, David Ecclestone, Pietro Frenguelli, Chris Hall, Terry White, Thomas Wilson, Dan Wojcik—and a total staff count of 60.

The Carlos Ventin Award for Municipal Heritage Leadership, administered by Architectural Conservancy Ontario and sponsored by +VG Architects, honours the firm’s founder, architect Carlos Ventin, who was a pioneer in saving historic buildings in Ontario for adaptive re-use. In 1972, before the practice of saving old buildings was widely accepted, he convinced the Town of Simcoe to save the historic Simcoe Courthouse to accommodate the new Municipal Offices and Library. Since then, one of the firm’s key missions has been to strengthen, reinforce and repurpose the cumulative heritage treasure of the province. https://acontario.ca/awards.php
