The Library Monitor Association (LMA Libraries) is a student-led educational association operating within school and institutional libraries across Oman, with its head office in Maximiliansau, Germany. The organization provides opportunities for students to assist in daily library operations, gain leadership skills, promote literacy, and support educational environments.
Most notably, LMA started operations in late 2022 at the British School Muscat and expanded to Muscat International School by Amity in 2025. They later partnered with a community library in 2026, the Olson Family Library, now an LMA-Operated library.
Overview
The Library Monitor Association (LMA) aims to foster responsibility, teamwork, and information literacy among student volunteers. Members, known as Library Monitors or LMA-Staff, work closely with librarians and school staff to manage resources and assist peers in accessing information.
Objectives
- Library Management Support: Assisting with cataloging, organizing, and maintaining library books and digital resources.
- Student Leadership:Developing leadership, communication, and administrative skills among school-aged youth.
- Literacy Promotion: Supporting school-wide reading initiatives, book clubs, and learning events.
- Peer Assistance: Guiding fellow students in finding academic materials and utilizing reference systems effectively.
Structure and Roles
The association operates through student-run committees supervised by the LMA's administration dept. and in cooperation with school staff:
- Head Library Monitor / Student Lead: Oversees daily assignments, coordinates monitor schedules, and liaises with school administration.
- Duty & Operations Officers: Handles the operations of the library and duty assignments of library monitors, including conducting training for new library monitors.
- Enrollment & Membership Officer: Manages applications and welcomes new library monitors to the association.
- Library Monitors: Volunteer students responsible for day-to-day library operations, shelving, book checks, and student support.
