The 1-bit Audio Consortium was established in 2001 by Waseda University, Sharp and Pioneer to further the development of "1-bit" audio technology. [2] The name of the consortium refers to pulse-density modulation (PDM), a technique used for encoding analog signal strength using density of individual bits, rather than multi-bit numerical values used in pulse-code modulation (PCM). Digital audio storage was almost entirely PCM based before the introduction of Direct Stream Digital (DSD), a PDM based encoding introduced in 1999 for use on the optical Super Audio CD medium.

In 2002 the consortium published Wideband Single-bit Data (WSD) specification describing a file format for Direct Stream Digital based PDM audio.[3] In 2012 the consortium published an updated 1.1 version of the specification.[4] Korg portable recorders MR-1, MR-2, MR-1000 and MR-2000s support WSD alongside other DSD based formats.[5][6][7] Merging Technologies Pyramix digital audio workstation (DAW) and Internet Sound it! Pro DAW provide WSD editing support.[8][9]
