107 is a contemporary multi-arts center located in Sydney. Their mission is to improve communities by encouraging people to live creatively. As a registered charity, their goal is to the advance of culture and transform how the arts, business and education engage across industries and the wider community. [1] Through this, they aim to create positive social change and connect emerging communities. 107 is a cultural facility supported by the City of Sydney and partners with organizations like the Re Agency, Dulux Chippendale, Finsbury Green, Mountain Goat Beer, Sydney Airport, Sydney Community Foundation, Cooks Lot, Sydney Posters, Community Building Partnership, Stronger Communities Program : Sydney, Lush(Company), ECS Services, Bottle Cycler, Audio-Technica, Allens, Mirvac, Urban Cooking Collective, and more. [2] 107 supports 14 resident artists, and 10 not for profit resident organizations. It has supported more than 11,000 artists, hosting over 1600 events and welcomed more than 105,847 visitors.

History[edit]

From 2001-2005 several groups like the Knot Gallery, The Frequency Lab and Token Imagination worked in an artist run space at Studio 107, Hibernian House, Surry Hills.[3] The space was home to a broad spectrum of music, performance, spoken word poetry and visual arts. But in 2008 they began to search for a new home. In 2011, the City of Sydney’s Accommodation Grant Program endowed the collective with a decommissioned car garage, located at 107 Redfern St, Redfern. [4]

Resident Organizations[edit]

There are a number of resident organizations and artists, all working within the creative sector under the one roof called 107. [2]

Tribal Warrior[edit]

Tribal Warrior was established to help vitalize Aboriginal culture and empower disadvantaged indigenous and non-indigenous people. Tribal Warrior produce specialized programs which teach skills for individuals to become self-sufficient and lead to employment opportunities[5]

Bower[edit]

The Bower works to reduce waste going to landfills, assist low income earners and educate and inspire Sydneysiders to live, work and play the sustainable way. It does this through a variety of ways holding workshops, repair services and a collection and rehoming service.[6]

Audiocraft[edit]

Audiocraft brings together producers from the public, community and independent radio and podcast sectors. They aim to harness the creative energy and excitement around audio storytelling and build a stronger community of producers across Australia.[7]

QImprove[edit]

QImprove provides support to non-profits, funders, philanthropists and other organizations with a social purpose. They provide stress-free solutions, allowing community organizations to concentrate on their core business. They offer assistance in navigating government reforms, conduct research and evaluations and write submissions and policies and procedures.[8]

Intimate Spectacle[edit]

Intimate spectacle is an independent performing arts production company working across genres.[9]

Purpose Accounting[edit]

Purpose Accounting provides financial management services to not-for-purpose organizations.[10]

Heaps Gay[edit]

Heaps Gay started as a series of regular parties for LGBTIQ+ kids. It now has a website where people gather to discuss Queer issues and stories.[11]

Spaces[edit]

Studios[edit]

107 offers studio spaces for artists to rent. They also have office spaces upstairs as well as workshop spaces.

Co-Working Space[edit]

Based on their mission of making a space for people to be creative, 107 transforms their café into a co-working space. They don’t serve food, but they offer couches and free wifi.[12]

Window Box[edit]

The outside of 107 is constantly changing based on which artist is being featured in the window box out front. This is the only place in the venue to can see art 24/7 and they often have ceramics, paintings, and digital art featured.[13]

The Gallery[edit]

The exhibit space has two open plan spaces programmed with exhibitions and creative events that rotate every two weeks.[14]

Performance Space[edit]

107 also offers a performance space for musical acts, comedians, plays and more. They have held many events including album release shows and recurring musical events.

Rooftop Garden[edit]

107 is also home to a hidden rooftop garden where they grow herbs to use in catered meals at gallery openings and events. The garden has also been used as a pop up bar and event space in the past.[15]

Joynton Avenue[edit]

Their current project is creating a second venue at Joyton Avenue. Green Square will become the most densely populated urban area in Australia. The new location will occupy the former nurses’ quarters in the Esme Cahill Building at 3 Joynton Avenue, Zetland. It’s goal is to provide accessible spaces for the creative sector to work and develop their skills, while fostering opportunities for collaboration and sharing knowledge through community workshops.[16] The City of Sydney is spending $540 million over the next ten years on infrastructure and streetscaping works at this center. Once it is completed, the entire Green Square Precinct will accommodate nearly 61,000 people and offer 21,000 permanent jobs for surrounding areas. The precinct will also include the new library, Early Education center, and Aquatic Center. It has not opened yet.[17]
