Formerly proposed to be renovated into a hotel, the building caught fire[1][2]. The fire created large flames and a large smoke plume that stretched across the city’s CBD[3]. The building’s structure collapsed many times, and spread to a nearby building[4]. Over 100 firefighters were called in to battle the blaze, which was contained around 18:00, but continued into the early hours of the next morning.[5]
History
The building was originally built as the Henderson Hat Factory in 1912. BB&B Ltd bought the building in 1957 before leasing parts of it. In 1978, Hanave Investments purchased the building. [6] In 2019, the building was set to be converted to a luxury hotel[7][8]; however, in 2023, as previously noted at the top of the article, the heritage-listed building completely burned down.
Aftermath
The fire left many people displaced due to the danger of the fire spreading while they were in their homes.
The next day, two teens handed themselves in to assist the police in the investigation.[9]
