On January 21, 2022, two New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers were shot while responding to a domestic violence call. It happened in an apartment on West 135th Street between Malcolm X Boulevard and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, near Harlem Hospital. 22-year-old Officer Jason Rivera died onsite, while 27-year old Officer Wilbert Mora was critically wounded by suspect Lashawn McNeil, 47.[1] A third police officer who went with the two officers later shot the suspect, who was also critically wounded. It was later reported that Officer Mora died the following Monday, Jan. 24, while confined in Harlem Hospital. The suspect died of his wounds the next day, Jan. 25.[2]

The three police officers responded domestic disturbance call around 6:15 p.m. on West 135th Street, on January 21, 2022, a Friday. The caller was the mother of the suspect, who reported having a verbal altercation with her son. Two police officers went to the bedroom to speak with McNeil, while the third officer stayed with the mother and her other son. After hearing the gunshots that critically injured his two companions, the third police officer run to the hallway and encountered the suspect. He was then able to shoot the suspect in the right arm and in the head.[1]
