13 Celsius

13 Celsius, also stylized 13 celsius, is a wine bar and café located in the Midtown neighborhood of Houston, Texas. Founded in mid‑2005 by Ian Rosenberg and investors with the goal of preserving the building and creating a communal space, it is known for its European-style ambiance and for serving wine at the optimal cellar temperature of 13 °C.

Location and Setting

  • Address: 3000 Caroline Street, Houston, TX 77004, USA, in Midtown/Montrose.
  • Housed in a 1920s Mediterranean-style structure originally built as “Jenning’s Cleaners and Dyeing Shoppe.” Historic elements such as the pressed tin ceiling and parts of the original façade were preserved.
  • An open-air courtyard was formed when part of the roof collapsed prior to renovation. The interior includes a 40-foot bar made of antiqued white Carrera marble and original furniture salvaged from the former Warwick Hotel in Houston.

History

First opened on December 27, 2006, 13 Celsius aimed to emulate—and surpass—the wine bars and enotecas of Europe. Its' mission is to curate a rotating selection of high-quality wines and offer a refined yet relaxed experience inspired by the owners’ experiences in Europe. Since 2012, the bar has been helmed by Adele Corrigan Wade, with an average staff tenure of five or more years.

Concept and Offerings

  • Named for the cellar temperature (13 °C) at which wines are stored and served, 13 Celsius is credited as Houston’s first wine bar to maintain this standard.
  • Offers a frequently updated wine list, with glass pours typically $10–$17 and curated bottle selections available for purchase.
  • Additional beverages include craft beers, seasonal small-production brews, vintage ports, vermouths, wine-based aperitifs, and bitters such as Underberg.
  • Food offerings include artisan cheese and charcuterie boards, panini sandwiches, duck rillettes, baked Brie, and desserts such as house-made truffles and toast-your-own s’mores. Local vendors include Houston Dairymaids and Cake and Bacon Bakery.
  • In 2023, 13 Celsius launched a private wine label, Patina, with a Barbera red from Piedmont, Italy, followed in 2025 by a Chardonnay white from Petit Chablis, France.[1]

Ambiance and Atmosphere

  • Combines bright daylight during the day with a dim, candlelit setting at night.
  • The crowd is attentive but relaxed, with knowledgeable staff guiding wine selections.
  • Despite its secluded location, it maintains a steady flow of loyal patrons.

Hours of Operation

  • Monday–Wednesday: 4:00 p.m.–midnight
  • Thursday–Saturday: 4:00 p.m.–2:00 a.m.
  • Sunday: 1:00 p.m.–midnight

Recognition

  • Awarded the 2007 ULI Development of Distinction award for historic preservation and revitalization.
  • Frequently cited among Houston’s best wine bars by local publications — including The Infatuation, Condé Nast Traveler, and Eater — praised for its inviting vibe, curated wine selection, and architectural character.[2][3][4]
  • In 2017, named by Food & Wine magazine as one of the best wine bars in the United States.[5]
  • In 2023 and 2025, recognized by the Champagne Bureau as one of the best places to drink Champagne.[6]
  • Staff awards include 2022 Iron Sommelier (Adele Corrigan Wade) and Houston Press “Best Sommelier” awards in 2013 and 2016.[7]
