1401 Main St is an office building located in Columbia, South Carolina. Constructed in 1976, the building stands at 14 stories tall. Designed by local architect Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle & Wolff, the building is in the international style which was popular at the time. Currently the building is occupied entirely by the City of Columbia, where they have consolidated their offices.
History
Former Buildings
A number of former buildings have occupied the site. One of the most notable being the former Columbia city hall.
Columbia City Hall- 1818
The first building on the site was Columbia's city hall and very first farmers market. Constructed in 1818, the building featured a bell tower which rang out on the hour. The building was destroyed during the burning of Columbia in 1865.
Columbia City Hall and Opera House- 1872
After the burning of Columbia, a majority of the cities buildings were destroyed, including City Hall. Constructed in 1872, the building not only held city offices, but also an opera house and various retail stores open to the public. The building was again destroyed in March 1899 by fire. This led to the displacement of many city offices including fire and police.
South Carolina National Bank- 1900

Current Building
The current building was constructed in 1976 by First National Bank of South Carolina. The bank moved from its former location just across the street at 1208 Washington St.
