1616 Sheridan Road
1616 Sheridan Road is a high rise condominium in Wilmette, Illinois. It was the first of the eight Wilmette high-rise condominiums / apartments presently on Sheridan Road (six of which are lakeside).
History[edit]
In 1956, William A. Nott asked the Village of Wilmette for a permit allowing him to construct a 41-room motel along the lake on Sheridan Road.[1][2][3] Many (for example local attorney Antonia Rago Herbert at a packed zoning commission meeting in 1956) spoke out against the proposal.[3] A group of Wilmette residents, including a number of lawyers, got together and formed Ouilmette Civic Improvement Association.[2] The Association got 2,5400 citizens to sign a petition against the development, and also pushed the urge for zoning to ban any future businesses that cater to commuters on Sheridan Road, and that the district the motel was planned for (formerly the unincorporated "No Man's Land") be rezoned for residential use only. The association's representatives of the group insisted they did not oppose the motel on moral grounds.[2]
The Village Board voted three votes opposing, and three votes in favor of the motel.[1][2] The village president cast a final vote opposing the structure. Nott sued the township, with the Illinois Supreme granted him permission to build the motel.[2] Nott instead decided he would build an apartment house instead.[2]
Nott built his high rise condominium in 1961[4] at 1616 Sheridan Road, soon to be followed by the many that stand today including Wilmette's tallest building (a lake side condominium at 1500 Sheridan Road).
