170 Russell (Originally Lido Theatre) is a live music, nightclub and event venue that holds performances from local and international acts, located on the corner of Little Bourke Street and Russell Street in Melbourne, Australia[1]. Built in 1965, it was part of the Total House development designed by Bogle & Banfield, which included a multi-storey car park and opened in 1964[2]. David McIlraith, known for his work in the Sydney theatre industry, first managed the venue and it was designed by architects Frederick Morsby, Stanley McConnell and Angus Winneke from the Tivoli.[3]

Venue History

The venue has undergone name and management changes throughout its 50 years of operations. First starting as the Total Theatre Restaurant, in 1966 the venue became the Lido Cabaret.[4]

In 1970, Ferdinand Nemeth purchased the venue and branded it the El Toro Espana, a Spanish-themed nightclub which included live, penned bulls. Ferdinand sold the venue to Gordon Banfield who renovated the venue to become a cinema after noticing a shift in audiences.[4]

In 1974, known as the Red Garters Theatre Restaurant, the venue started running theatre shows incorporating a Tivoli style of entertainment. This included showgirls, dancers, singers and musicians that supported performances from Shirley Bassey, Lovelace Watkins, Winifred Atwell, Eartha Kitt and June Bronhill.[3]

From 1980 until 2014 the venue operated as the Billboard nightclub.[5] In 2014 the venue entered a partnership with Corner Presents, rebranding as 170 Russell, named after the venue address after a shift in the Melbourne live music climate. [6]

Throughout the 1980s, the venue hosted performances from ACDC, INXS, Little River Band, Paul Kelly, Split Enz, Renee Geyer, Jon English, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, Brian Cadd, Uncanny X Men and Mondo Rock.
