The 1843 Marked Tree earthquake occurred on January 4, 1843, near present-day Marked Tree, Arkansas, United States. The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 6.0 and was part of the seismic activity associated with the New Madrid Seismic Zone.[1]
The earthquake was felt across a wide area of the central United States, though no fatalities were reported.[1]
Tectonic setting
The New Madrid Seismic Zone is an intraplate fault system located in the central United States. It is responsible for significant historical earthquakes, including the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes.[1]
Earthquake
The earthquake is known from historical reports and later compilations referenced by the United States Geological Survey. Due to limited data, its magnitude and location are estimated.[1]
Shaking was reported over a broad region, consistent with other earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.[1]
