1908 Candy

The 1908 Candy Company.[1] is a 4th generation American candy manufacturing company owned by the Pagano, Ferrara, and Buffardi families, who launched the Ferrara Candy Company, now the third-largest candy company in the U.S. behind The Hershey Company and Mars (candy). Current candies owned by the 1908 Candy Company include Alexander The Grape, Johnny Appletreats, Mr. Melon and Cherry Clan. Popular in the 80s, the candies relaunched with a new look[2] and packaging[3] in 2018[4], with Alexander the Grape and Johnny Appletreats currently being sold at select Walgreens around the country [5]
History
The Ferrara Candy Company began as a family-run bakery on Taylor and Halsted Street in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1908 by Italian immigrants, the bakery originally specialized in cakes and cookies. It all changed with the growing popularity of its sugar-coated almonds, affectionately known as “confetti.” The company then branched off into penny candy making. The success and demand of that one candy led to the formation of the world-famous Ferrara Candy Company. At its helm were the Pagano, Ferrara, and Buffardi families, who took it from a small-time candy-making business into the future when they introduced five and ten cent packaging in the 1940s. The company’s breakout success came in the following years as most of the candy produced by Hershey and Mars were being bought by the U.S. government to supply the military. Ferrara was able to step up to the plate and provide candy for the people back home.
In December 2017, Ferrero SpA[6] acquired The Ferrara Company. In 2018, Lou Pagano, a 4th generation descendant of the original Ferrara founders, opened a new candy company called The 1908 Candy Company, relaunching some of the classic Ferrara brands, such as Alexander The Grape, Johnny Appletreats, Mr. Melon and Cherry Clan.
