On June 1st 1927, an unusual and rare violent tornado would impact communities in Gelderland and Overijssel, most notably Neede. The tornado flipped train cars, demolished buildings, and threw objects hundreds of metres. It remains the only IF5 tornado on record in the Netherlands.[1]
Tornado summary
The tornado was reported to have touched down near Lichtenvoorde, it would track north east, impacting the town of Neede. In Neede, many buildings were levelled by the tornado, it picked a threshing machine and threw it several hundreds of metres, Well built masonry homes would be completely swept away by the violent tornado. Train cars in Neede were picked up and overturned, the tornado also destroyed railway infrastructure in the town. Trees were uprooted and snapped and forests were left destroyed, wildlife and farm animals were killed. The tornado was reported to have dissipated near Tubbergen.[1][2][3]
Aftermath
Railways in Neede were rendered completely unusable due to the tornado and inhabited places were cut off, the tornado killed 7 people and injured 200, it stands as the only IF5 tornado in Dutch history and the second deadliest tornado in Dutch History, only after the 1981 Moerdijk Tornado. The tornado would be rated F4 on the Fujita scale which would stand until November 2025.[1]
Re-rating
In November of 2025, the ESSL would upgrade the rating of the tornado from (I)F4 to an IF5 on the newer International Fujita scale, the re-rating of the tornado to IF5 made it the first and only IF5 tornado in the Netherlands.
