The 1966 anti-Igbo pogrom Retaliation was a response to the 1966 Anti-Igbo Pogrom. which was a series of violent events that occurred in Nigeria in 1966, specifically targeting the Igbo ethnic group. These events played a significant role in escalating tensions and ultimately leading to the Nigerian Civil War. After the July 1966 counter-coup, violence erupted in northern Nigeria. Mobs and militias, primarily consisting of members of the northern ethnic groups, targeted Igbo civilians living in the northern regions. Thousands of Igbo people were killed, and many more were displaced from their homes. The anti-Igbo sentiment and violence led to an increasing divide between the northern and southern regions of Nigeria, particularly between the Igbo-majority southeastern region and the northern region dominated by the Hausa-Fulani ethnic groups. The pogrom further deteriorated ethnic, and religious conflicts in the nation.

Retaliation[edit]

In response to the thousands of Igbo people killed in Northern Nigeria, Northerners were massacred in Port Harcourt and other Eastern cities by Igbo mobs, and other Eastern tribes,[1] and a counter exodus of Hausa-Fulani, fled to the north, to seek safety. this exodus also included other northerners like Tivs to the north.
