[1]During the fall of 1969 at the Denver mint work began on creating a new copper nickel base metal dollar coin for general circulation, work began soon after on creating 1970 dies for a copper nickel Peace dollar.The coins were struck in February of 1970 and an estimate of 3000 of the 1970 peace dollars were struck and tested for long term durability and by December of 1970 all 3000 examples of the 1970 Peace dollars were destroyed.Plans to bring back the Peace dollar were scrapped and by 1971 a new dollar coin would arrive for circulation and that coin was the 1971 Eisenhower dollar coin.
