1981 East Prairie Tornado
[1]On April 23, 1981, a large and destructive tornado hit the small town of East Prairie, Missouri. The tornado touched down in the afternoon hours with little warning. However, a law enforcement officer was reported driving through neighborhoods of East Prairie, warning people about the incoming tornado prior to its arrival. As the tornado arrived, it carved a substantial path through an East Prairie neighborhood located in the southeast part of town. The tornado neared the East Prairie high school, alongside many other parts of town. As the tornado carved a path through the southeast part of town, it lifted the roofs off of houses and did considerable damage to well-built structures. Then, the tornado pushed out of town and dissipated quickly afterwards. The aftermath of the tornado was documented through many photographs and was reported in local newspapers. There were two fatalities reported, including the unfortunate death of 10-year-old Peggy Brightman. Many other injuries were also reported. The damage and deadliness of the 1981 East Prairie Tornado would etch an unforgettable memory into the minds of people who survived the destructive tornado. ====
