The 1982 Burma cyclone, also known as the 1982 Gwa cyclone,[1][2] was a powerful and destructive tropical cyclone which affected Myanmar during May 1982. The first tropical cyclone of the 1982 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, BOB 01 developed from a low-pressure area[to be determined].
Meteorological history[edit]
In later April, the monsoon trough was active south of Sri Lanka, extending eastward into the central portion of the Bay of Bengal. On 26 April, an area of convection associated with this trough was first monitored by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). On 1 May, a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was issued as a central dense overcast (CDO) formed over the system. The next day, the JTWC issued the first warning for the system.
The tropical cyclone tracked northeastward, remaining approximately 120 nm (222 km) east of India. While crossing the Bay of Bengal, the cyclone continued to intensify, peaking with 1-minute sustained winds of 125 kt prior to landfall. After landfall, the system rapidly weakened, dissipating on 4 May.[3]
