The Turkish F-100 shootdown occurred on 14 September 1983, when a Turkish Air Force F-100F Super Sabre was shot down by Iraqi forces after violating Iraqi airspace.[1]

Background

On the day of the incident, two Turkish Air Force F-100F Super Sabre aircraft belonging to the 182 Filo "Atmaca" squadron crossed into Iraqi airspace near the Zakho region.[2][3]

In response to the incursion, an Iraqi Mirage F1EQ launched a Matra Super 530F-1 missile that struck one of the Turkish jets (serial number 56-3903), resulting in its crash in the Zakho Valley near the Turkish-Iraqi border.[3][2]

Outcome

Despite the shootdown, both pilots survived the incident and were able to return safely to Turkey.[1][3]

The event remained classified and unknown to the public for nearly three decades. It was officially acknowledged only in 2012, when Turkish Defence Minister İsmet Yılmaz confirmed the shootdown in response to a parliamentary inquiry.[1]

Legacy

The incident is one of three known cases where Turkish military aircraft were shot down by foreign forces in the post-1960 era.[1]

A record of the shootdown also appears in a detailed list of aerial victories and air-to-air engagements involving Iraq, compiled by air war historians.[4]
