  • 30 January – Police detained Koha Jonë journalist Altin Hazizaj for two days on charges of assaulting police officers.[2]
  • 26 February – Police detained and questioned the staff of Koha Jonë following a bombing in Tirana.[3]
  • 12 March – Populli Po editor Arban Hasani was fined over articles concerning national conflict and the secret police.[4]
  • 21 March – Albania and Greece signed a treaty of friendship, cooperation, good neighbourliness and security in Tirana.[5]
  • 26 May – Parliamentary elections were held amid electoral irregularities documented by Human Rights Watch.[6]
  • 28 May – Police dispersed an opposition demonstration in Tirana protesting the parliamentary elections, beating and detaining protesters.[7]
  • 2 June – A second round of parliamentary elections took place.[8]
  • August – The government opened three Greek-language schools in response to requests for minority-language education.[9]
