On 18 October 2011, a Nepal Army Britten-Norman BN-2T Islander, which was performing an ambulance flight for an injured soldier from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu, crashed in a dense forest near Dhorpatan and caught fire. All six occupants were killed.[1] The plane was returning to the capital from a rescue mission near the Indian border when it lost contact with air traffic control in bad weather at 7:05 pm after it had taken off from the city of Nepalgunj in southwestern Nepal.[2][3][4]
Aircraft[edit]
The aircraft involved in the crash was a Britten-Norman Islander operated by the Nepalese Army Air Service, the air force-like wing of the Nepalese Army. It was produced in Romania and its maiden flight was in 1988 with the Dutch National Police.[5] It was the fist accident of this aircraft operated by the Nepalese Army Air Service, which operated several aircraft of this type.
Crew and passengers[edit]
The plane was carrying a patient along with a doctor, a nurse and a relative of the sick person. There were two crew members on board.[3] The crew members of the ill-fated aircraft were the two pilots. On board was also Doctor and another soldier, who accompanied soldier Keshab Airee, who was suffering from Meningitis, as well as the brother of the injured soldier.[4]
Incident[edit]
The Britten-Norman Islander plane, took off from the Nepalgunj Airport at 6:25 pm on October 18, 2011 and lost contact with the control towers at 7:05 pm before crashing into the hillock. The crash site is a remote mountainous area about 137 kilometers from the district headquarter Baglung and a nearly four-hour walk from the nearest police post at Dhorpatan, Baglung District. The plane crashed in the forested mountainous area and rescuers were able to reach the crash site only during the early hours of the next day.[4]
