2012 Syrian protests and demonstrations
Protests against President Bashar al Assad throughout the year 2012 by all walks of society took place. Mass protests nationwide in March led to fresh violence and fighting. Mortar fire and shootings against opposition members and anti-government protesters led to five to seven demonstrators killed. Police dispersed protesters demonstrating in July in prisons with tear gas and rubber bullets. Violence in April led to clashes and four deaths. Mass campaigns in May saw tear gas and live ammunition fired at demonstrators marching after the occupation of the Aleppo university. Hundreds attended the protests. As demonstrations rapidly spread and escalated, more violence ensued and more killings occurred. In January and February, confrontations with police in anti-government protests took place nationwide and embassies were stormed. The protests subsided after the death toll rose and violence intensified.
The demonstrators were careful not to trigger another revolution, mindful of the Civil uprising phase in the Syrian civil war.
