1st quarter[edit]
The first quarter went by rather quietly, with teams exchanging punts until Georgia took the first lead of the the game 7–0 on a 14 yard run by Junior running back Sony Michel with 1:33 left in the quarter.
2nd quarter[edit]
In the second quarter, Georgia got off to a fast start with a 27 yard field goal by Rodrigo Blankenship on the first drive of the quarter. On the ensuing possession, Tennessee drove all the way down the field until Senior Quarterback Josh Dobbs hit junior running back Jalen Hurd for what appeared to be a 24 yard scoring strike, until the referees revealed that the ball had been forced free by the Bulldogs defense just prior to breaking the goal line, and Georgia was awarded a touchback on the turnover. The rest of the quarter went by without incident until the final two drives of the quarter when Georgia scored their second touchdown of the game with true freshman Quarterback Jacob Eason recovering a Sony Michel fumble in the end zone to give the Bulldogs a 17–0 lead with 2:00 to go in the half. On the ensuing possession, Dobbs would lead the Vols 64 yards down the field in just 1:48 to get the Vols on the board at 17-7 with just 12 seconds left, which would be the score heading to the locker room.
3rd quarter[edit]
In the third quarter, the Volunteers would be the ones getting off to the hot start, with Dobbs engineering a 10 play, 65-yard drive lasting 4:29 that resulted in a 19 yard TD pass to Hurd, cutting the Dawgs' lead to just three right off the bat. After a couple of punts, Eason would find classmate tight end Isaac Nauta for a 50 yard catch and run that would leave the score at the end of the quarter at 24–14.
4th quarter[edit]
As the final quarter began, the Vols would use the first play of the quarter for Dobbs to find redshirt Junior running back Alvin Kamara for a 16 yard catch and run that would bring the Vols back within three. The ball would then go back and forth between the teams before Tennessee redshirt Junior punter Trevor Daniel would pin the Bulldogs back at their own six yard line, and after a play that lost a yard to the five, Eason would find himself back to pass and swarmed by Vol defenders who would pop the ball out of his hands and pounce on it in the end zone for the Vols' first lead of the day at 28–24. With just 2:56 left in the game, the Dawgs had two penalties and an incomplete pass that would result in a 3rd and 15 at their own 41 yard line. Eason would throw a pass into coverage that would be intercepted by Vol cornerback Malik Foreman. After a Tennessee three and out, the Bulldogs ha 1:07 left to try and score. Eason would take the Bulldogs from their own 19 to the Tennessee 47 yard line, where he would launch a bomb down the sideline to true Freshman wide receiver Riley Ridley, who would make his first catch of his Bulldog career at the 2-yard line and take it in to give the Bulldogs a 31–28 lead with just 10 seconds left.[3] However, Georgia defensive back Rico McGraw ran onto the field without a helmet in celebration, resulting in a 15 yard penalty which was enforced on the ensuing kickoff. Evan Berry returned the kick 20 yards to the Georgia 48 yard line with 4 seconds left; a Georgia offsides penalty before the kick put the ball at the Georgia 43. With one play left, the Vol offense walked out onto the field led by Dobbs, who heaved a Hail Mary pass toward Sophomore wide receiver Jauan Jennings. He caught the ball just inside the end zone amidst four Bulldogs for a 34–31 Tennessee win.[4]
