On January 19 and January 20, 2017, protests and unrest broke out in Washington, D.C., as a reaction to the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States. Anti-Trump protesters, mostly dressed in black, attempted to disrupt the inauguration and clashed with police in various parts of downtown Washington D.C.
January 19[edit]
On the night of January 19, anti-Fascist protesters from a group called "Disrupt J20" gathered at the Inaugural Ball in Washington D.C. The group threw debris at attendees and one man was hit in the head with debris.[4] Police responded with teargas and pepper spray,[5] scattering the crowd.
January 20[edit]
On the day of the Inauguration, a group of around 100 protesters smashed windows of businesses in downtown and tipped over garbage cans.[6] The protesters also blocked entryways to the Inauguration and chained themselves to barricades. After Trump was sworn in, unrest continued in the city, spreading to other areas. Near the parade route, 400 to 500 masked protesters threw rocks and chunks of concrete at police.[7] Rioting continued late into the afternoon near Pennsylvania Avenue.[8] A limousine was tagged with graffiti, its windows were shattered, and it was later set on fire.[2]
