2018 Turkish Cypriot Protests
In January 2018, Turkish Cypriots organized a rally called "Democracy and Peace Rally", where thousands gathered to protest Turkish policies towards the community. The protest was organized in response to hardliner attacks towards the headquarters of an opposition newspaper, Avrupa/Afrika, located in the northern part of Nicosia. One of the other significant reasons for the protests was an incident that occurred in the same week. Following the statement of Doğuş Derya, one of the opposition MEPs from Turkish Cypriot pro-peace political party Republican Turkish Party, in the Turkish Cypriot Parliament, one of the members of the parliament, who was a Turkish settler, threw a piece of paper at Doğuş Derya. Turkish settler MEP, whose name is Bertan Zaroğlu, was protested by thousands across the country who had thrown the paper at Derya, in response to her statement where she said, "Together against fascism!". The protest has become one of the most significant signs of increasing concerns of annexation among the Turkish Cypriots.[1]
