2019 Delhi Temple attack

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

On 30 June 2019, a group vandalised the Durga Temple in the Hauz Qazi area of Chandni Chowk, Delhi, India. [1] The temple was attacked following a quarrel over parking that escalated. [2]

Background

The fight began over a parking dispute at 10:00 pm on 30 June 2019, which later turned into a communal clash. [3] A fruit vendor, Sanjeev Gupta, had a disagreement with one Aas Mohammad over the parking of Mohammad's bike outside Gupta's house. According to Gupta's wife, Babita, Mohammad resisted. He was then beaten by a group of Gupta's friends. [4]

Sequence of Events

A team from the Hauz Qazi police station arrived and detained Gupta and Mohammad. Cross First Information Reports (FIRs) were also filed. [4]

Temple Attack

Around 200 people gathered at the police station after rumours that Mohammad had died circulated on WhatsApp. The group then proceeded to damage the temple. [5]

Stone Pelting

On 1 July, at 2 pm, there was another incident of stone pelting by another group, injuring Navbharat Times photographer Surender Kumar. [4]

Aftermath

Shops around Lal Kuan were closed, access to the temple restricted, and outsiders from Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar were barred from the area. [4] Several companies of Delhi Police and Central forces were deployed to separate the groups. The police contacted religious leaders from both communities to de-escalate the situation. [4]

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Central Delhi tweeted:

"After some altercation and a scuffle over a parking issue in Hauz Qazi, tension arose between two groups of people from different communities. We have taken legal action and all efforts are being made to pacify feelings and bring about amity. People are requested to help in restoring normalcy"[6]

Arrest

Delhi Police arrested three accused involved in the temple attack on 2 July 2019. [7]

Reaction

The Imam of Old Delhi's Fatehpuri mosque, Mufti Mukarram, urged Muslims to help rebuild the temple. [8]He called for calm and urged people to resolve the issue through dialogue.

On 2 July 2019, Indian Parliamentarian from Chandani Chowk and Union minister Harsh Vardhan (Delhi politician) visited the temple site. He appealed for peace and harmony. [9] He stated:

"It is very unfortunate and painful. The kind of things done to the temple is unforgivable. I have been told that the Police has been involved, culprits will be arrested soon and punished. I appeal to the people to maintain harmony."[10]
