2020 Bayonne bus assault
The 2020 Bayonne bus assault was an assault on Philippe Monguillot, a 59 year old bus driver, in Bayonne in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine area of southwest France on 5 July 2020.[1][2][3] The driver was declared brain dead the day after the attack[1][2] and died five days later.[4]
The assault[edit]
The driver had refused to let several people on the bus because they had no tickets and were not wearing masks.[1][2] Masks are mandatory on public transport in France because of COVID-19.[1][2] The driver was repeatedly punched by members of the group.[1][2] According to union representatives, he tried to stop the people from bringing a dog onto the bus.[1] The driver stepped out of the bus and was beaten by two men in their twenties, resulting in a serious injury.[2] Philippe Monguillot was unconscious when brought to hospital and was declared brain dead on 6 July 2020.[2] He left behind a wife and three daughters.[4]
Aftermath[edit]
The mayor of Bayonne condemned the attack, calling it "barbaric act".[1][2] The attack was also condemned by high ranking French politicians, including Minister of Interior Gerald Darmanin.[4]
Bus services were disrupted in the region on 6 July as drivers refused to work in protest against the assault.[2] Regional bus company Chronoplus was criticised for not having done enough to ensure driver's safety.[2] On 8 July, thousands of people took part in a protest march through the city.[4]
On 10 July 2020 it was announced that the driver had died.[3][5] Two men were charged with attempted murder, two others with non-assistance to a person in danger and a fifth with attempting to hide a suspect.[3][6][4]
